From our base in Fat Hogs Bay, on the eastern end
of Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands, we are within easy cruising range
of many fabulous snorkel and dive sites. The itinerary on a given day depends
on the guests' interests as well as weather and sea conditions, bearing
comfort and safety in mind. Meals are always served while the boat is anchored
or moored, but beverages from bottled water to Piña Coladas are available
throughout the day. One very popular full-day destination for snorkel lovers
is the Indians, off Pelican Island, followed by The Caves on Norman Island.
On the way, we cruise west through the scenic beauty of the Sir Francis
Drake Channel. We might drop anchor in serene Benures Bay (on Norman Island)
for lunch. This lovely spot is home for a large population of sea turtles.
Linger over lunch and just relax on deck until the ride home or if you
feel energetic enough, don a mask and fins for a third swim. The pace
is up to you. Heading east instead, some elect to walk through The
Baths, a striking volcanic boulder structure on Virgin Gorda, followed
by snorkeling. Perhaps you'll choose Marina Cay or the Dogs for a second
stop. Many trips accommodate beach lovers, too. Cooper Island is only 30 minutes from base. Those who prefer to stroll in the sand can go ashore while others avail themselves of a premier snorkel site just off the beach at Cistern Point. On the right sort of day, several sites at nearby Dead Chest can be wonderful, teeming with multicolored fish. Only a few minutes away, the beach at Deadman's Bay, Peter Island, is world-reknowned

Visitors during the late summer might pick Guana Island
instead, with both snorkel and beach options as well as a unique pelican
rookery. Bushes above the bluffs are filled with white-feathered chicks
and hundreds of mature birds. If you've "been there, done that," we'll show you something new. Ever seen Fallen Jerusalem or Tobago? How about flamingos on Anegada? Stay with us for several days and we'll circumnavigate Tortola! Options abound; the only hard part is deciding which way to go. We'll help with recommendations, based on what you like to do. Plan your cruise early; you may just have to come back for yet another day on Golden Spirit to fit it all in! |
